Is Arsenal’s Acquisition of Viktor Gyökeres Set to Be the Signing of the Season?
There have been some incredible moves in the summer transfer window already, with all the major clubs completing big-money deals to improve their chances in the season ahead.
Arsenal have been title challengers for the last few Premier League campaigns but have always fallen short due to a lack of firepower.
Now, that problem may have been addressed with the addition of Viktor Gyökeres. The sharpshooting Swede has the potential to go on to be the signing of the season and could help Arsenal finally seal another league title after a 22-year wait.
Gyökeres One of Many Striker Options Explored by Arsenal
Arsenal have been desperate for a new striker for some time, and were linked with some huge names before the summer transfer window. One of the biggest of these was Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian powerhouse who notched 36 goals in 30 appearances for Galatasaray last season. The 26-year-old could have been a shrewd signing for the Gunners, but he ultimately joined the Turkish club on a permanent deal.
Mikel Arteta was also reportedly keen on signing Alexander Isak, but Newcastle’s price tag was ultimately too high. Many would argue that Gyökeres has even greater potential than his Swedish compatriot, though. Indeed, when comparing their international stats, Isak only has 16 goals in 52 appearances, while Gyökeres has 15 in 26 showings for his country. The latter has been more prolific at the club level as well, with an exceptional 68 goals in 66 matches during his two seasons at Sporting CP.
Can Arsenal’s New Man Help Deliver a Premier League Title?
Arsenal gave Liverpool a good run for their money last season, but ultimately fell short in the final furlong and trailed the Reds by 10 points in the final league standings. More notably, they only notched a total of 69 goals, which was fewer than third-placed Manchester City’s 72, and way off Liverpool’s total of 86.
Last term, Arteta started the season with a choice of Kai Havertz or Gabriel Jesus in the number 9 position.
The latter then went on to suffer a terrible ACL injury halfway through the season, and this had a significant impact on the Gunners’ chances in the final push. As the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool swiftly moved for new attackers in the summer transfer window, Arsenal also had to be decisive with the acquisition of Gyökeres.
The former Coventry City man looks to be exactly what Arteta needs, and he could help to completely reinvigorate the Arsenal attack. Indeed, according to the football bet odds, the Gunners can now be backed at 15/8 to win the league. This puts them ahead of Liverpool in the bookies’ estimations, and just behind City at 6/5.
If Gyökeres can bring the goal-scoring form he’s shown over the last three seasons to the Emirates, Arsenal could be in serious contention for the title this term. There have been some marquee signings across the division, but this is an early contender for the shrewdest deal of the transfer window.
